Disturbing & Sad Statistics

The Associated Press is reporting that 1 in 4 homeless are veterans. I read about this in the Washington Post Express this morning, and couldn’t help but think how right my Dad (a Vietnam Veteran) has been about this mess. We’re going to see a massive increase of drug use, crime, divorce, alcoholism, suicide and homelessness in the coming years as our men and women come home. Families are being torn apart every day. The stain on the fabric of our country grows larger with every headline coming out of the Middle East.

So terribly sad. And for what? History has shown that when we try and set up governments, even the successful ones wind up turning out bad for us in the long run. We supported the Shah in Iran, and when the people revolted, we were (and still are) held to task for the evil the Shah’s government did. We helped trained their secret police force, Savak just like we helped train the Taliban’s fighters in Afghanistan. We did all we could to stop them from nationalizing their oil resources much like we are so against Venezuela nationalizing theirs. We propped up Saddam Hussein, and we can see how well that worked out. Now we’re trying to get the Iraqis to build a government they seem to have little interest or success in building.

Throughout history we’ve been on the wrong side of things like this and I am convinced that this terrible foreign policy is destroying this country. The chickens are coming home to roost, folks… And it’s happening exponentially faster than it used to.

Finally, someone has some backbone

In the House of Representatives yesterday, Congressman Dennis Kucinich took the floor to move for the impeachment of Dick Cheney.

This should have been done years ago.

Do I think any of this will result in an actual removal from office? No. But it’s nice to see someone standing up. Points me more and more in the direction of supporting Kucinich for the Democratic primary. I’m currently looking at Kucinich, Obama and Gravel. The rest of them are weasels.

FBI: Catching Bad Guys since… hey wait a minute

Man angry with son-in-law fingers him as terrorist to FBI

The 40-year-old son-in-law and his wife were in the process of divorcing when the husband had to travel to the United States for business.

The wife didn’t want him to travel since she was sick and wanted him to help care for their children, regional daily Sydsvenska Dagbladet said without disclosing the couple’s names.

When the husband refused to stay home, his father-in-law wrote an email to the FBI saying the son-in-law had links to al-Qaeda in Sweden and that he was travelling to the US to meet his contacts.

He provided information on the flight number and date of arrival in the US.

The son-in-law was arrested upon landing in Florida. He was placed in handcuffs, interrogated and placed in a cell for 11 hours before being put on a flight back to Europe…

This is awesome. I sure feel safe and secure knowing that anyone with a grudge against me can have me detained by the FBI. God Bless America

Congrats, Al Gore!

Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 for efforts regarding climate change.

Some folks are saying Gore should run for President… That clamor had died down a bit, but seems to be back in full force again. I’m not sure where I stand on it, honestly. I voted for Gore in 2000. I would probably vote for him again, but I really need to see where he currently stands on issues other than climate change. I think it is important, of course… but we have some other things to deal with as well. I wouldn’t want to see so much attention paid to that that we forget about things like health care and our failed foreign policy.

$9.11 for Rudy

According to the invitation, “$9.11 for Rudy” is an “independent, non-denominational grass-roots campaign to raise $10,000 in small increments to show how many individual, everyday Americans support ‘America’s Mayor’”

In fairness, Giuliani’s campaign is not behind this idea, and thinks the amount is an “unfortunate choice” — but it takes a special kind of person to come of with this crud and apparently that type of person supports Rudy Giuliani.
