Appearing on National Public Radio’s quiz show, “Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me,” this weekend, Perino admitted a story she’d previously only shared in private: When a reporter asked her a question during a White House briefing in which he referred to the Cuban Missile Crisis — she didn’t know what it was.
“I was panicked a bit because I really don’t know about . . . the Cuban Missile Crisis,” said Perino, who at 35 was born about a decade after the 1962 U.S.-Soviet nuclear showdown. “It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I’m pretty sure.”
Virginia’s primary on Feb. 12 is likely to be anticlimactic. It falls one week after the Super Tuesday primaries, which are likely to seal the nominations for both parties.
Gee, why don’t we just go ahead and do a little more to perpetuate the fact that “Super Tuesday” is the only primary day that matters. And what is with the news media still always using the old state abbreviations?
The Associated Press is reporting that 1 in 4 homeless are veterans. I read about this in the Washington Post Express this morning, and couldn’t help but think how right my Dad (a Vietnam Veteran) has been about this mess. We’re going to see a massive increase of drug use, crime, divorce, alcoholism, suicide and homelessness in the coming years as our men and women come home. Families are being torn apart every day. The stain on the fabric of our country grows larger with every headline coming out of the Middle East.
So terribly sad. And for what? History has shown that when we try and set up governments, even the successful ones wind up turning out bad for us in the long run. We supported the Shah in Iran, and when the people revolted, we were (and still are) held to task for the evil the Shah’s government did. We helped trained their secret police force, Savak just like we helped train the Taliban’s fighters in Afghanistan. We did all we could to stop them from nationalizing their oil resources much like we are so against Venezuela nationalizing theirs. We propped up Saddam Hussein, and we can see how well that worked out. Now we’re trying to get the Iraqis to build a government they seem to have little interest or success in building.
Throughout history we’ve been on the wrong side of things like this and I am convinced that this terrible foreign policy is destroying this country. The chickens are coming home to roost, folks… And it’s happening exponentially faster than it used to.
Do I think any of this will result in an actual removal from office? No. But it’s nice to see someone standing up. Points me more and more in the direction of supporting Kucinich for the Democratic primary. I’m currently looking at Kucinich, Obama and Gravel. The rest of them are weasels.
