Everything is a tourist attraction.

I find this an hilarious, appropriate and very sad testament to American society. These folks are probably more interested in having their picture taken than in doing something to actually change the culture of corruption in the government that lends itself to these things happening.

A common request is, “Excuse me, can you please tell me where the Larry Craig bathroom is?”

Evans was just 15 minutes into her shift Friday afternoon and already had heard the request four times.

“It’s become a tourist attraction,” Evans said with a smile. “People are taking pictures.”

Since news broke Aug. 27 of the arrest of Idaho Sen. Craig in an airport restroom here, the airport has been fielding requests for directions to the men’s room in question, which is conveniently located just off the central food court and popular shopping area.

Remembering

I wasn’t sure I was going to make a post about the terrorist attacks today. I generally turn into a raving lunatic and scream for three hours when I get started talking about it. But I’m going to try anyway.

I was living in Fairfax, VA at the time. I worked from home, and generally late at night, so I actually slept through the initial commotion. I woke up sometime after the towers fell, if I remember correctly. As I remember, it was after the towers fell, but before they discovered Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Honestly, it all runs together for me on that day which I guess is pretty much what everyone experienced even if they were glued to the television as the immediate events unfolded.

Anyway, over the next several days I slept very little. I read every tiny bit of information that I could find, and watched several video broadcasts at once at some points, just learning everything I could. That’s what I’ve come to realize I do in times of distress or depression. I read. I become an information sponge. Data brings me comfort.

I was always a newshound, and was always politically minded, but this was definitely a launching point to where I’m at today. I didn’t peel myself from the internet, radio and television for weeks.

Tubing, Infected Mushroom and iPhone Hackery

The weekend was jam-packed with good times. On Saturday, a bunch of us got together to go whitewater tubing. I had never been before, but was excited to go. Elizabeth and I liked it so much, we went again on Sunday! One thing I wasn’t expecting though was how much of an upper-body workout it could be. I’m actually sore today, particularly in the abs. I guess that is from half-sitting-up to sip my beer all day. I didn’t actually do too much paddling, but I’m sure that contributed. All in all, a very good time and I’m looking forward to going again.

After tubing on Saturday, Elizabeth and I napped and then went to Fur to see Infected Mushroom. They put on an awesome show and brought the whole 4-piece band, including the bad-ass guitarist who strolled out on stage wearing a KISS t-shirt and proceeded to rock the FUCK out, complete with obligatory rockstar poses. The tore it up and I had a great time. I had been a little concerned as I had never been to that venue and was a little worried that the crowd would turn things off for me. As a rule, I don’t like clubs with bottle service. It tends to bring an element of elitism and posturing that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Let’s just say I was very pleasantly surprised. The crowd was fine, and the staff was very professional throughout. I had no problems whatsoever, save the usual couple of folks that annoy me on any given club night.

In other news, I just hacked my iPhone with Installer.app. So far, the process has been completely painless. I’m poking around the available applications and will likely make a list of “must-haves” for hacked iPhones.

Go Apple!

An open letter to iPhone Customers

… even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple’s website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Some folks are saying this was planned all along… Get folks riled up, then come out like a saint, etc etc… Regardless, this is freaking awesome. I wonder if we’ll be able to use the $100 in the iTunes store.

As a rule, Apple “gets it” — and that is why I consistently support them.

Heh, maybe I could figure a way to use the credit to buy a share of Apple, then wait until after Christmas and dump it ;]

Screw you, Early Adopter! ~ Love, Apple

Today, Apple got rid of the 4GB iPhone, and dropped the price of the 8GB model by $200. This comes just over two months since the product launched in the first place. That has to be a record for fastest price-drop.

Basically, now I can go to an Apple store, and purchase an 8GB iPhone for $100 less than I paid for my 4GB.

Gah!

They also announced some other stuff, including an updated iPod Shuffle in new colors (including a Product (RED) offering), a new iPod nano (affectionately dubbed by some, the “fatty”) which supports video and the WiFi iTunes store you can access from the iPhone soon and from the new iPod touch which is basically an iPhone without the phone. The disk space on all the models got moved around too. Looks like the 8GB nano comes in all the colors now, not just black, and looks like the price came down a bit.

On top of that, they announced a partnership with Starbucks which will allow Starbucks customers to instantly buy songs that are playing in Starbucks locations. Kind of neat, but I wonder what T-Mobile thinks about that. T-Mobile provides the WiFi access inside Starbucks locations, but does not carry the iPhone, which is exclusive to AT&T. So, in a round-about way, T-Mobile has a partnership with a company that does not benefit T-Mobile in the least.
